I think that everyone goes through a period of idolizing their significant other. It happens the first time you lay eyes on him/her, the thunderbolt strikes, and the feelings are mutual. What a wondrous time in life and the relationship. Call it infatuation, or puppy love, or just plain naiveté; it’s the stuff that creates gods and goddesses, and lasts for a while.
Reality and time peel away the flowery covering to reveal the true person inside. When it works out, the wondrous idol is replaced with a true soulmate with all the warts and scars. It is as if that idolized cocoon transforms into a really beautiful butterfly of a partner as life experiences are shared over the years. Then, after many years together, one hopefully can look at the other and truly idolize him/her for the wonderful life shared and that could not have been known with anyone else. It, the idolizing, has made the full circle from first sight to becoming one with the real person inside.
